Beach cleaning along Moratuwa Beach on 30.11.2019
In line with the environmental conservation programmes launched across the country, a cleanup campaign was launched in Moratuwa spearheaded by the Municipal Council over the weekend to clean a 10 kilometer coastal stretch. Under the programme initiated by Mayor Samanlal Fernando, the coastal areas in Koralawella, Lunawa, Angulana, Moratuwella and Egoda Uyana were cleaned up. The Mayor, council members, police officials of Moratuwa and Angulana and civilians joined up in the cleanup campaign.Role of Menuri Sachintha Kodikara in the project
I , as a
member of Sustainable Development Goals Children’s Parliament of Sri Lanka, joined
this project, with Civilians, police, mayor and cleaning service men, to give a
hand to protect life under water (GOAL 14) and life on land (GOAL 15). Also, to
make Sri Lanka a beautiful country. Moreover this also supported SDG GOAL
3(Ensure healthy lives and well-being for all at all ages), because cleaning
the beach meant that the risk of communicable diseases reduced to some extent
around that area. The project continued for 2 hours and 30 minutes.
How
other civilians supported the project
It was surprising to see many civilians participating the project
including children. Everyone worked tiringly to separate degradable and
non-degradable garbage and also to load them to trucks.
Conclusion
Civilians around the area claimed that Municipal
Council’s cleaning services never comes to their area, which results in them
throwing it to the sea or the beach. However, this problem was solved by the
police by promising them that hereafter a cleaning service will come to their
area (Angulana Beach).Police also fined a sum of money from a fishing boat
owner because the boat contained water which had mosquito larva in it. In
conclusion, the project was successful as a lot of bags of garbage was removed
from the beach.
